Three years later the docking manoeuvre was critical to success of the Apollo II mission allowing the moon lander to safely return astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin to the command module.

- The recipient Dr William Mayo was a room mate of Scott at the University of Michigan in 1950. Scott went on to graduate from Westpoint and in 1971 commanded the Apollo 15 Mission being the first Astronauat to drive on the Moon in the famous 'Moon Buggy.'
