Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 261 With the tragic World turmoil currently unfolding Gold seems to have reclaimed its mantle as a safe haven in troubled times soaring in recent weeks to new record highs. After the Great Depression, Governments largely adopted Keynesian economics and abandoned the gold standard which linked the issuing of paper currency to the holding of gold reserves and instead printed unbridled numbers of banknotes to stimulate spending and growth. These days emerging super economies such as China can still see the benefit of accumulating wealth in a physical commodity such as Gold in order to lessen its reliance on US Dollars which have acted as the principal World currency over the best part of the last century. This month we have on offer two iconic Australian Proof Sovereigns struck in the era when Australia’s Currency was backed by Gold. The 1926 ‘S’ Sovereign PCGS SP66 was struck in the last year of operation of the Sydney Mint while the 1931 ‘M’ Sovereign PCGS PR65 marked the last Australian date of Gold Sovereigns. Both coins are ‘top of the pops’ in terms of history, condition and rarity. Two other intriguing coins are a Hong Kong 1960 H Cu-Ni Dollar and a Hong Kong 1964 H Ni-Br Ten Cent. These are usually coins found in the ‘junk bin’ in coin stores but these two coins are different. The HK 1960 Dollar had a milled edge missing the security groove. Of the 342 coins graded by NGC and PCGS only a single ‘error’ coin graded NGC MS62 has been graded suggesting that the survival rate for this coin is only a fraction of a percent and we are confident the coin on offer will equal or surpass the sole coin currently graded. The 1964H Ni-Br Ten Cent is even more intriguing. While there are examples noted of 1950 and 1963 Ten Cent error coins with a milled edge missing the security groove, none have been graded and there is no recording of the 1964 H date. Additionally, whilst at first glance you would classify the coin as a ‘milled edge error’ on closer examination there is sporadic evidence of minute letters in place of the security groove. These appear to be either ‘H’K’ for Hong Kong but more probably ‘H’M’ for Heaton Mint suggesting that the Heaton Mint trialed a new edge mint mark in 1964. Certainly it is an intriguing scenario requiring more research which could well lead to other examples being found, but at the moment this stands as the only known example. Smalls Auctions
