Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 222 One of the more intriguing items in this Sale relates to the Depression-era Premier of NSW Jack Lang. In 1931 with the Great Depression hitting hard Lang called for a moratorium on the interest payable on loans provided to the NSW Government by UK-based financiers. Obviously this went down like a lead balloon and the ‘Lang Plan’ was rejected by both the other State Premiers and the Commonwealth Government who called for more stringent cuts to NSW Government spending to address the economic crisis. A 1928 amendment to the Australian Constitution had made the Commonwealth Government ultimately responsible for all State debts so it stepped up and paid the interest for the NSW Government and then sought restitution from Lang who not to be outmanoeuvred withdrew all the money in the NSW Government accounts and held it in cash at the Trades Hall. Lang was dismissed by the NSW Governor in May 1932 and lost heavily to the United Australia Party in the subsequent election. Included in the Sale is a “One Lang - Starvation Debenture’ a political handout by the UAP for the June 11th Election. These are usually tattered and torn but this example is complete barring a few small holes and captures a rare moment in Australia’s political history.
