Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 258. We have included in this sale two NSW 1813 'Type 3' Dumps, which transport us back to the early Colonial days of Sydney. The Mint Master responsible for producing the 'Dumps' was a convict named William Henshall, who was entrusted by Governor Macquarie to strike two coins, each from a delivery of 40,000 Spanish 8 Reales sent to the Colony from India. The idea, borrowed by Macquarie from the Caribbean colonies, was to create two coins of greater value from one host coin, but which, based on their underlying intrinsic value, would deter visiting ship-borne traders from removing the coins from the Colony. The center plug, known as the 'Dump', had a face value of 15 Pence, while the outer ring, the 'Holey Dollar', had a local value of 5 Shillings. One avid collector has recently unearthed detailed documentation showing that the original shipment of Spanish Dollars may have been somewhat short of the 40,000 coins which were long thought to have been shipped to Australia, and I wait in anticipation of his published research. During their production, Henshall experimented with the look of both the Holey Dollars and Dumps, fine-tuning their designs as he worked through the cache of host coins. The majority of Dumps fall into the categories known as the A1 & D2 types, which together account for 95% of surviving coins, while the much rarer E3 and C2 types make up about 3% and 2% respectively. These types are thought to have been experimental runs adjusting the designs in the lead-up to the main production runs. In our research, it was the E3 Type which was the first type produced, albeit experimentally, which would make the 'Copper Trial of the E3 Dump' in our sale the earliest surviving Dump. Truly a museum piece. Also, of note in our sale are some Full Red examples of Australian George VI Copper Halfpennies and Pennies. These might be common dates, but they do not come any brighter and will certainly add prestige to your collection. Smalls Auctions
