Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 262. Having just returned from the Hong Kong April 2025 Coin Fair I can report coins and banknotes are going gangbusters overseas. Many of the major International Auction Houses exhibit at the Fair with most reporting record prices in recently completed sales. Perhaps the only series that has pulled back is Chinese coins which reflects the recent softness in their economy. We have always offered high-grade coins for investors as well as souvenir grade coins for collectors and at the fair we sold many World coins that sat at or near the top of the major third-party grading census reports proving that astute coin investors are willing to pay a considerable premium for quality. In our current Sale we have a number of coins that meet these criteria. Particularly of note are the 1864, 1867 and 1868 Sydney Mint Sovereigns all graded PCGS MS63. It is very difficult to achieve an MS63 grade for a Sydney Mint Sovereign but when you consider that in our judgement all three are deserving of at least an MS64 grade it makes them even more desirable. You can compare these three coins against coins pictured in the PCGS Photo Gallery to establish for yourself that they have been harshly graded and that we are not talking through our hat when we say that in our view all three should be sitting atop the population reports. Even so, as it stands the 1864 is the second finest, the 1867 the equal finest and the 1868 the second equal finest. Another coin of note is the 1922 Shilling PCGS MS65. This coin is the equal finest known but if you are an aficionado of strike, which is barely considered by the grading companies, then this is likely the top of the pops. Also in the Sale are some Uncirculated Indian Coins. The talk in Hong Kong was that this series is likely to be the next big thing with India’s population and economy surging. It is interesting that before the Industrial Revolution, which reduced the reliance on manpower, it was the most populous nations that were counted as the wealthiest. With the rise of China and India perhaps the wheel has turned. As usual the Sale also includes a good selection of Fine Jewellery, Coins and Banknotes and other Collectables to whet your appetite.
