Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 221. In this Sale we are featuring an interesting piece of Australiana in the form of a Ned Kelly Scrimshaw Horn. Australia looks up to its bushrangers in much the same way as the outlaws Robin Hood and Jesse James, who have been elevated to cult status. It is probably because of our convict heritage that a bushranger who was hanged for murder sits atop its pantheon of folk heroes. It is worth reading the notes attached to this lot for an insight into the Kelly legend. But, Australia doesn’t just laud its high-profile criminals it also reserves a special place for those that excel on the sports fields. In our Sale we have the 1911 and 1912 Rugby League Football First Grade Gold Medals issued to Charlie Lees who was a second row forward in the Premiership winning Eastern Suburbs team. Lees scored his side's only try in the 1911 Grand Final when Eastern Suburbs defeated Glebe 11-8. The 1908 Reserve or Second Grade Medal he received in the 1908 is also included in the Sale and well as a winner’s Gold Medal for the postseason City Cup. These early medals are very rarely offered for sale and not to be missed by the sports fanatics. The Sale also includes a good selection of affordable Australian and world coins as well as a cameo selection of Jewellery and other collectables. Smalls Auctions
