Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 256 The term “one of the finest known’ is a long-trumpeted term in the Coin Industry. New and old collectors alike who have not honed their grading skills fall back on the hyperbole of catalogue descriptions to justify their purchases without ever questioning whether the auction house or coin dealer has any better numismatic judgement than themselves. It is for this reason that the third-party grading services such as NGC and PCGS have in recent years come into their own as the arbiters of which coins of a particular date or type qualify as ‘one of the finest known.’ PCGS, which is the major third-party grading service in the Australian context, has on their website an interactive photo gallery that displays three of the top coins submitted in the hope of claiming the title as ‘top of the pops’ i.e. the highest coin graded in their population report. You are also able to see in a table format a breakdown of the various grades of coins they have seen. In our Sale we have a ‘Top of the Pops’ coin in the form of an Adelaide Pound - Type 2 PCGS MS65. PCGS have now graded ninety-five Adelaide Pounds - Type 2 or roughly a third of the estimated surviving mintage of three hundred coins and to date none in their opinion have bettered this coin. So if you prefer your investment coins to be third-party graded by the preeminent service for Australian coins then this is the coin for you. Of course no dealer, no matter how long they have traded, can lay claim to seeing all the available candidates for the ‘best of the best.’ PCGS, which keeps a photo file of all coins that are submitted to them for grading are in a better position than most to adjudicate on which coin qualifies as the ‘finest known,’ and for over a decade the coin in our Sale has retained its position as the ‘Top of the Pops’ The most expensive Type-2 Adelaide Pound that I have been able to locate was sold by a well-known Melbourne dealer for $300,000 in 2022 when it was described as ‘Gem Uncirculated, a virtually faultless strike and brilliant satin fields” - not unlike the coin we have on offer. Would that coin make it into a PCGS MS65 holder ? Who knows, but of the ninety-five coins submitted to PCGS so far for grading the coin in our Sale still remains the ‘sole finest graded.’ Smalls Auctions
