Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 245. One of the highlights of this Sale is the Nicholas Baudin 1801 Expeditionary Medal struck in Gilt Bronze to commemorate the departure of the corvettes 'le Geographe' & 'le Naturaliste' to the South Pacific. This medal was once owned by Doctor John Chapman who curated a magnificent collection of Historical Medals associated with the Discovery and Settlement of Australia. Napoleon Bonaparte had personally authorised the voyage and hand-picked Baudin who was tasked with mapping the West Coast of Australia and the largely uncharted Southern Coast, which is where in 1802 he ran into Matthew Flinders at Encounter Bay who was doing the same for the British. Despite the tetchy relationship between the French and British, Baudin was welcomed at Sydney Cove when he called in to replenish supplies. This gave Baudin and his crew a chance to have a good look around and recent research has revealed that Francis Peron the zoologist on Baudin's voyage drafted a secret report on a strategy to capture Sydney for the French. It is highly likely the ambitious Napoleon had greater long-term plans than just conquering Europe but, if he had seriously contemplated invading far-flung Australia it was soon pushed to the backburner as he focused his attention on taking on all-comers in Europe. This medal certainly captures the global politics of the day. The Sale also has a strong selection of Russian Imperial coins including a rarely offered Russia 1762 Copper 10 Kopek of Peter III. The 1798 Quarter Rouble of Paul I is another rarity worthy of mention. The WWI-era Turkish Specimen notes represent another intriguing chapter in history. Leading up to the First World War the Ottoman Empire was under siege on many fronts with the British and the French conspiring to carve up its territories. Starved of funds to maintain its Empire the Ottoman Turks allied with the Germans during WWI who in turn propped up their economy with new banknotes backed by the German Treasury. Although they are all incredibly rare it is the 50 Livres (1918) AH 1334, PCGS 64 details which is the pick as it is likely unique as a specimen. For Australian Collectors there is a comprehensive selection of Polymer Banknotes many with desirable First Prefixes as well as a good offering of modern Coin issues. Smalls Auctions.
