Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 255 An intriguing coin that we have up for Sale is the Great Britain George I 1727 Half Guinea PCGS XF45. This coin was issued in the last year of the reign of George I and was the only gold denomination released. All Half Guineas of George I are considered rare except for coins struck in 1825 which despite a small mintage appears to have survived in disproportionate numbers, although coins from this year too are very scarce. The coin on offer ranks as the fourth highest graded 1727 Half Guinea by any reputable grading service. The intriguing aspect is that it has been mislabelled by PCGS as a 1721 Half Guinea and also appears in their Population Report. If it were a 1721 in XF45 it would sell for perhaps 20 times the estimate we have on the coin as this date is unknown in any modern collection. But getting back to the 1727 Half Guinea if you are holding out for a better grade coin to turn up you might well topple off this mortal coil before the opportunity presents itself. For collectors of high-grade Australian Florins, we have three coins on offer to tempt you. The Australia 1915 (L) Florin PCGS MS64 is the equal second best with only the exceptional ‘Benchmark’ PSGS MS66 placed in front of it. The coin on offer was once part of the ‘Timbertop’ Collection which held the mantle of the finest Australian Florin Collection for many years, so it is certainly an exceptional coin. The Australia 1913 (L) Florin PCGS MS64+ also graced the “Timbertop’ Collection as is only bettered fractionally by two coins graded PCGS MS65. The third coin is the Australia 1931 Florin PCGS MS66 which is the equal second highest graded with only the ‘Benchmark’ Coin PCGS MS67 sitting in front of it. Three exceptional coins to be considered by collectors who appreciate quality. For collectors following the voting in the U.S. primaries we have included some autographs of past players. We have Henry Agard who served as Vice-President under Roosevelt from 1941-45 before running unsuccessfully for President for the Progressive Party in 1948. Also on offer is a signature of Adlai Stevenson who was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee in 1952 and 1956. On the flip side we have a signature of Wendell L Wilkie a losing Republican Presidential nominee in 1940. For the erotically inclined, check out the last five lots of the Sale. I’ll leave it to your imagination as I don’t think anything needs to be said in that regard. Smalls Auctions
