Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 235 The highlight of this Sale is a collection of Australian Penny varieties put together by an avid collector who began his collection in the 1960’s. He has two of the more sought-after varieties both in better than average condition. The first is the Australia 1931 'Indian Obverse - Dropped 1' Penny in about Very Fine condition. This variety has been known since the 1960s when it was promoted as much rarer than the famed 1930 Penny. This is undoubtedly true as no more than 50 coins have emerged through the decades of which 24 coins have now been graded by PCGS. The combination of dies was an ‘experimental’ striking and Mint records show "nil thousand production" i.e., less than 1,000 coins (estimate 500) were originally produced back in 1931. The majority of the survivors are found VG/Fine condition and so a problem free coin approaching Very Fine condition is a superior example. The second coin is a much later discovery going back only 20 years. In July 2003 the late collector John Saxton posted on his well-regarded coin blog that "a few days ago Geoff Raynes of Kalgoorlie WA discovered a hitherto unpublished variety of the 1920 Penny. The reverse features a dot over the lower scroll, but the obverse is the London (English) die pattern." To date 14 coins have been graded by PCGS but considering its late discovery you could expect that perhaps 50 coins will eventually emerge. So how did this rare variety eventuate. Well, in July 1920 the Sydney Mint was sent three English obverse dies along with three 1919 .//. reverses dies so that it could prepare the presses to strike 1920-dated pennies. It is now apparent that one of these obverse dies was used 'experimentally' with a 1920 /./ reverse to produce this extremely rare variety. The coin in our Sale is graded NGC VF25BN which is a very competitive grade for this Penny variety. Also appearing in our Sale is a collection of rare historical Explorer Medals including three varieties of Captain Cook’s Resolution and Adventure Medals struck in Platina, Bronze & Silver.
