Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 233. Included in this Sale are a selection of ‘raw’ Australian and World coins which will allow you to purchase choice coins without having to pay for the considerable premium usually attached to third-party coins. The East African coins particularly have been conservatively graded and if this corner of the British Empire is your area of interest there are quite a few that would be in the contest for the finest known of the date. The other area of interest that is well represented is the Australian Polymer Banknote series. One notable lot is a 1988 Bicentennial $10 note hand signed by the two signatories to recognise the groundbreaking release of Australia’s first polymer banknotes. Technically, it is illegal to deface Australian currency, but I guess when you are the Secretary to the Treasury and the Governor of the Reserve Bank you can get away with it. Another interesting note is a first issue Polymer ‘Specimen’ $5 note with a unique Serial No. AA00000000 ‘No. 0000.’ Specimen notes are technically ‘valueless’ although they very valued by collectors and are given on ‘loan’ to police forces, state libraries and banks etc so that they are kept abreast of any changes to the National currency. Bands of notes e.g., Serial Nos. 200 to 300 were reserved for specific types of institutions such as overseas banks and were recorded manually in a ledger held at the Reserve Bank Headquarters in Sydney which was used to identify rogue notes that had been misappropriated. A decade or so back I can remember the Reserve Bank claiming back a $100 Polymer Specimen note that had been souvenired by a departing employee of the Bank of England and sold through Spinks London. And this is not an isolated case as I have even heard on the grapevine that the collection once held at the Australian Federal Police Offices in Sydney had been replaced with circulation notes by someone who had access. But, now it may prove difficult for ‘stolen’ notes to be redeemed as there is also an unconfirmed report that the Reserve Bank ledger was misplaced (read thrown out) a number of years ago. So, who was the recipient of this note ? I guess we’ll never know but is undoubtedly a rare offering. Smalls Auctions
