Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 252. Now that the dust has settled on the ‘Voice to Parliament’ it is worth taking stock of our reflections of our First Nations Peoples. From the earliest days of Australia, Colonial artists populated their landscapes with native aboriginals alongside their renditions of exotic animals such as kangaroos and emus. Perhaps it was a naïve wide-eyed take on the sights of a new world but perhaps it reflected what the new European arrivals really thought of Australia’s original inhabitants. After all the justification of ‘Terra Nullius’ conveniently ignored their human existence. When the truer art of Photography arrived in the mid-1880’s Australian Aborigines were often the subject of choice for those taking up the new medium and their staged photographs remained a world-wide marketable commodity well into the 1990’s. In this Sale we have included four watercolours by the Australian artist B(enjamin) E(dwin) Minns (1864-1937) whose key subject areas were boats and aborigines. A New South Welshman he learnt his craft under the tutelage of esteemed artists A.J. Daplan, Julian Ashton and Lucien Henry rising in his later career to be the President of the Australian Watercolour Institute of Sydney. He was certainly an artist of note and in these four watercolours his skill with the medium is unquestionable. The gentleness of his art reflects a true affinity with the subject matter but in keeping with the times he has titled one painting “Australian Abo (Darwin)” and another “ Abo Woman New South Wales.” Still, the subjects of the works look almost regal in their demeanour so he certainly wasn’t denigrating in any other respect. They all stand as exceptional pieces of art. These are no doubt the highlights of the Sale but there are 400 lots of coins, banknotes, jewellery and eclectic collectables to sate your interests. Hopefully there is something there for you. Smalls Auctions
