Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 224. In this Sale we have included a diverse selection of affordable Australian coins and banknotes as well a few PCGS graded coin highlights. Other items worthy of special mention include a rare bound Presentation Edition of 'Photographs (of) New South Wales' which was produced in very small numbers around 1900. A rare Norman Lindsay bookplate identifies the original owner as 'Hugh. D. McIntosh' the promoter of the Burns-Johnson World Heavyweight Boxing match held in Sydney, 26th December 1908. There is also an 1860s Sterling Silver Mounted Emu Egg in the form of a lidded goblet the work of the renowned Melbourne jeweller William Edwards. An Englishman, Edwards had arrived in Melbourne in July 1857 and set up his first workshop at 129 Collins Street. He advertised his special skills of making 'sacrament services to order - Tea and Coffee sets (of) any design - Emu Eggs mounted - Race Cups (of) all sizes and design.’ Edwards was considered a leading silversmith of his day and he submitted works to the International Exhibition, 1861 and the International Colonial Exhibition, Melbourne, 1866. An intriguing lot included in the Sale is also a set of Gold Scales which were reputedly those used at the Adelaide Assay Office the maker of the unofficial Adelaide 1852 Gold Pounds. Over the years, staff members from Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum have asked to look at the bottom of the drawers on these scales but have then left disappointed. The Powerhouse Museum now houses the Sydney Mint Museum Collection and what we have learnt is that each set of official scales that were used at the various Australian Mints were individually numbered under the drawers. Our set which is numbered ‘2’ rules it out as the scales used at the Sydney Mint which went missing some years ago. Smalls Auctions
