Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 236. In this Sale we have some spectacular Australian George VI copper pennies that are amongst the best of the best. They may be common dates, but they are as fresh as the day they were minted and accordingly sit in PCGS Red holders. You don’t see coins this untouched very often. Another coin of exceptional quality is the Australian 1923 Sixpence in PCGS MS66 which is the equal finest known. The Australian Sixpence series was long thought to have had a common reverse from its inception in 1910 to the very last coin struck in 1963 but this proved not to be the case. When I was writing the Benchmark Catalogue back in 2015 I discovered that a new reverse began with the 1923 Sixpence which carried 143 denticles compared to the 140 denticles that appeared on the Australian sixpences from 1910 to 1922. It’s interesting how this was not picked up by the cataloguers through the years and nor was the change on the denticles on the 1911 Threepence which increased in count to 121 up from the 118 that appeared on the 1910 Threepences. They may be small changes, but they are important if you are a type collector. The other coins worthy of a special mention are the 1951 PL Halfpennies struck by the London and Heaton Mints. Neither of these mints had struck coins for Australia since the ‘teens’ of the Century and were suddenly called upon in 1951 to help out the overworked Melbourne Mint. London needed to adopt a new mint mark i.e., ‘PL’ for ‘Percunia Londinium’ or ‘Money of London’ as the Melbourne Mint had already released 1951 halfpennies without a mint mark which was typically the purview of the London Mint. It was not thought possible to distinguish the difference between the coins struck in London and Birmingham (Heaton Mint) but again in a first for the Benchmark Catalogue we noticed that the left crossbar on the ‘Y’ of ‘HALFPENNY ‘is straight on some coins and has a hook on others. The London Mint produced some proofs as well which also have a straight bar indicating that the hook was possibly a ‘marker’ for the coins struck at the Heaton Mint. As a consequence, we surveyed about three hundred 1951 PL halfpennies and found that they roughly split 60/40 on straight versus hooked bars which coincidently corresponds with the number of coins struck by the London and Birmingham Mints and so there is circumstantial evidence that the London Mint surreptitiously marked the dies it forwarded to Heaton Mint. We like to think so anyway. As usual there is a fine section of Jewellery, Australian Banknotes and other collectables on offer. Smalls Auctions
