Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 259. The staff of Smalls Auctions wish you a Happy Easter – but it comes with a caveat. The office will be closing over the Easter break and will reopen on Tuesday, 2nd April. So, please allow us a little bit of latitude in posting off items to customers who were successful in Sale 258. Sale 259 concentrates on early Australian Colonial History with a selection of no fewer than sixteen early Promissory notes on offer. These were the currency notes of early traders which allowed the wheels of business to turn when official coins and banknotes were scarce on the ground. These paper ‘I O U’s’ mimicked circulating coin denominations and, although illegal, were allowed to circulate by the authorities who turned a blind eye. Some of the notes on offer are unique varieties that have not survived in institutional collections and are important to our history. For the Gold Bugs, we have included a smattering of Half Sovereigns, Sovereigns, and Twenty Franc coins that are starting out very close to their intrinsic value. It is well worth doing the calculations because with Gold on the rise, these coins may well be under their spot price by the time the Sale concludes. The Sale also includes a strong selection of Coins, Banknotes, and Jewellery to whet your appetite alongside your chocolate eggs. Happy Easter!
