Auction 123 Highlights

Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 123.

This Auction has a mixed bag of collectables from rare First Edition Books, Government Reports detailing the infrastructure of the Australian colonies, Australian Pre-Decimal Banknotes and World Coins and Stamps.

One of the Government reports is a comparative study conducted in 1856 of 202 schools run by the Government (National) as well the Church of England, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian & Wesleyan Churches. But what should prove most interesting to old Sydneians is the second report of the Trustees of 'Sydney Grammar School' tabled in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly on the 1st of September 1857 less than a month after the school had opened its doors to the first intake of 110 pupils on the Monday, 3rd of August.

Perhaps the pick of the books is actually a Second Edition of Major T. L. Mitchell’s "Three Expeditions into the Interior of Eastern Australia," which is described as “carefully revised.” The exquisite colour plate on page 47 of Volume 2 is of a ‘Cockatoo of the Interior’ which later became known colloquially as a ‘Major Mitchell Cockatoo.’

The sale also contains a good selection of World coin minors and a selection of South African Proof Sets. The coin sets are from the eponymous Jerome Remick Collection and are well-matched and of an extremely high grade.

There is a strong selection of Australian Pre-decimal banknotes many taken from original bundles in uncirculated condition to round off the sale.

We hope you find something to satisfy your particular collecting interest.
