Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 285 This week’s sale features several important Asian coins, including a Chinese 1987 Gold (999) Proof 500 Yuan, weighing in at an impressive 5 troy ounces. This was the first year of issue for this remarkable coin and represents a solid investment for those who have faith in the yellow metal, which is currently trading at around AUD $4,000 per troy ounce. Another coin of significant interest is a ‘genuine’ Vietnam (Annam) 5 Tien ND (1841-47) Thieu Tri coin, which NGC has described as having ‘altered surfaces.’ This is a very rare coin, and a graded example, PCGS MS62, sold at Stacks & Bowers' April 2023 auction for USD $21,000 (approximately AUD $30,000). In comparison, our well-detailed coin, albeit with ‘altered surfaces’, is kicking off at a modest AUD $3,000. A space filler or an investment, you be the judge. From the same vendor, we also have a Vietnam (Annam) 4 Tien, ND (1848-83) Tu Duc, NGC AU details starting at AUD $2,750, compared to the USD $10,200 (approximately AUD $15,000) achieved for a PCGS MS63 in the Stacks & Bowers' May 2022 Auction. Also worth considering is the Vietnam (Annam) 1 1/2 Tien, ND (1848-83) Tu Duc, NGC MS62, starting at AUD $4,000. This is a difficult coin to find in Mint State, as demonstrated by the USD $4,320 (approximately AUD $6,350) paid for a PCGS MS63 example sold in Stacks & Bowers' April 2023 auction. For those with their eyes on Europe, look no further than the Bulgaria 1912 100 Lev, PCGS MS61. Paradoxically, this coin is much rarer in Mint State than in Proof, with a similar example in an NGC MS61 holder selling at the January 2023 Heritage Auction for USD $14,400 (approximately AUD $21,000). For collectors of Australian coins, the sale includes a problem-free Australian 1930 Penny in good Fine condition, with the mandatory full band and six clear pearls. Always the glamour coin of the Australian pre-decimal series, this coin, kicking off at AUD $22,500, represents good value. Or, if it’s banknotes that take your fancy, we have a non-consecutive run of ten Australia 'Johnston-Fraser' AB10 - First Prefix (1st issue) Bicentennial $10 notes (1988) in uncirculated condition which are offered in singles, pairs, and a trio at about a quarter of catalogue value. An opportunity not to be missed. Smalls Auctions
