- There are five possible candidates for the 22-year-old 'Barlow' whose fate is stippled on this smoothed English penny, but the lad most likely is the unlucky Thomas who was transported to the colonies for life on 30th May 1842. The earliest of the transportees was George Mewbury Barlow who was sent to New South Wales on the 15th July 1831 having been convicted of 'assault with intent to rob'. He was soon followed by Benjamin Barlow who was banished to Van Diemen's Land on the 22nd July 1831 for stealing a snuff box. The next candidate was William Barlow who was sent to Van Diemen's Land on the 7th May 1835 after having languished on the prison hulk 'Fortitude' after his conviction on the 9th August 1834 for burglary. His original sentence of 'death' was commuted to 'transportation for life'. 'Horse stealer' Jeremiah Barlow was the last to be transported to Van Diemen's Land on the 23rd September,1843 for an unusual 10-year stretch. The unlucky Thomas Barlow was a 22-year-old sailor who was convicted of robbery and was sentenced to transportation for life to Van Diemen's Land. He sailed on the 'Waterloo' which left from Sheerness on 30th May 1842. Unfortunately, Thomas' life sentence was cut short when the 'Waterloo' floundered at the Cape of Good Hope and 189 passengers were drowned. Thomas was one of the 143 convicts locked below decks who perished but his token may well have survived having either been left in England as a parting gift to a relative or friend or souvenired from his abandoned possessions eventually making its way to Australia. The obverse of the token reads : Barlow / aged 22 yrs / When this / you se (sic) Rem / ember me / and bair. The reverse continues : me / in your / mind let / all the wo / rld say what. Thomas was convicted at Gloucester close to the border of Wales which could account for the use of the welsh word 'bair' instead of the english 'bear' in the inscription, promoting his prospects as the likely subject of this token.
