  • Notes:
  • Jerome Remick in his eponymous catalogue notes the existence of two varieties of the Rupee i.e. where the letters in the obverse legend are 'straight-based' or have 'curved' or 'seriffed' letters. The coin on offer is the much rarer varity with 'curved or seriffed' letters. Of the 47 graded examples we found pictured on the internet there are only five other examples of this variety and all are inferior to the Remick coin i.e. VF details, XF-AU details, PCGS AU58, NGC MS63 and ANACS MS64. The grading services appear to be looking for flat surfaces and at least a partial wire rim before they will consider a coin to be a 'specimen' and the Remick coin at least has normal rims and slightly concave surfaces. It is interesting that Remick noted that "proof specimens are more common for the one rupee than they are for the other silver coins (of the series)" and this is certainly backed up by the population reports of PCGS and NGC where the rupees considered to be circulation strikes are less common in higher grades. There is some evidence to suggest that the 94,000 rupee coins struck for circulation will eventually be identified by the 'curved' or 'seriffed' letters in the obverse legend while the 'proof' or 'specimen' coins will be singled out by their 'straight-based' letters.
