Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 163 In this Sale we have an extensive selection of coins of the World including two rare sets from Canada and Iceland. The Canadian set is a dual year collection which includes a full matching set of specimen issues of the 1911 coinage which are all graded by NGC as well as a specimen $5 and $10 coins from 1912 both in PCGS holders. Rarely offered as a set this provides a great investment opportunity for collectors of this series. A little more obscure is the 1946 Iceland Proof Set which introduces the new decimal currency of the Republic. These sets were only struck as proof record coins for the collections held at the branches of the Royal Mint and a few other institutional collections, so the mintage numbers are likely less than ten. It is an extremely rare set. The Sale also includes a rare ‘scrimshaw’ horn depicting the life and times the Australian Bushranger ‘Ned Kelly.’ This was reputedly carved by George King, Ned’s American stepfather, George King, who looked to cash in on his growing notoriety using as his template pictures published in the Illustrated Sydney News. Modern Australia began life in 1788 as a British Penal Colony and is still enamoured with its criminal past and so Ned is both looked upon by some as a ‘Jesse James’ or ‘Robin Hood’ figure and contrarily as a ruthless killer by others. Whichever way you read history he remains an enduring figure in Australian folklore. We hope you find something to interest you in our Sale. Smalls Auctions
