Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No:23.

This month we have on offer an interesting array of small collectables from the working stock of a renowned antique dealer of past years who traded from Sydney’s prestigious Queen Street.

Followers of our regular News Bulletin would also be aware of the selection of extremely rare NSW 1813 Dumps that are featured in this sale. These coins perfectly capture our convict roots, as I would think that only in Australia would William Henshall, a recently transported forger, be entrusted with striking our first coinage. It was planned that the new coinage would replace the rag-tag promissory banknotes that circulated in the Penal Colony, and which were mostly issued and ‘backed’ by released convicts. The three notes in our sale are signed by a previously convicted wool-stapler, a sheep ‘duffer’ and a bigamist who had set up businesses.

This month there is also another wide selection of third-party graded Australian pre-decimal coins on offer with many being amongst the top few known. Collectors should avail themselves of these coins while they are still available as it is becoming quite apparent that many of the long-established auction houses have had difficulty sourcing quality pre-decimal coins for quite some time. Most of what they now offer in their bi-annual sales are ‘sliders’ with at best one or two competitive coins, and the obvious scarcity of such material suggests that prices are likely to rise soon. Get in while you can.

Happy bidding
