Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 176 In this Sale we continue with Mark Freehills’ Collection of coins from Africa. Last Sale we offered coins from British East Africa which today covers the territories of modern-day Kenya, Uganda, Zanzibar and Tanzania. This Sale we are crossing the African Continent to offer coins from British West Africa which today has splintered into the nations of Sierra Leone, the Gambia, Nigeria and the Gold Coast which has now been renamed Ghana. Interest in the British West Africa series took off in the early 1970s after the publication of Jerome Remick’s ‘Guidebook and Catalogue of British Commonwealth Coins.’ Remick himself recognized the initial research of Major Fred Pridmore in identifying the series’ rarities and many of these obscure coins are included in the Freehill collection. Mark’s eye for quality is highlighted by the standard of the coins he assembled with most ranking amongst the finest known. Of special mention is the BWAf 1936 H 1/10 Penny which has always ranked in the impossible to find category. Mark’s coin sourced from the specialist dealers Format Coins of Birmingham was graded MS65 by NGC sits at the top of the few examples known. Remick himself estimated that only 15 to 35 examples had survived and the coin in his own collection, which subsequently graded NGC MS61, cost him USD $200 in 1967. One of the coins that Mark was unable to secure for his collection was the BWAf 1922 KN Penny. That was because the only example ever offered at auction sat in the eponymous Remick Collection which was offered for sale in November 2006 by Spinks London. Spinks were uncertain in their description as to whether it was an impaired Proof, but it has since been third-party graded by NGC as MS62. It is undoubtedly a major rarity in the series. There are a number of Specimens, Proofs and Patterns in the Freehill Collection with most having mintages less than ten and Mark’s examples being amongst the best of the survivors. All in all, this Sale offers you the opportunity to secure some of the finest known British West Africa coins. But of course, it is not all British West Africa and we have included a selection of other choice world coins as well as some other collectables. Smalls Auctions
