Welcome to Sale 48 an eclectic mix of collectables with an historical, scientific, military or sporting focus. Some of the more interesting items relate to the shipwreck of the Royal Mail Steamer ‘Duoro’ which foundered in 1882 near Cape Finisterre in Spain the site of a notorious maritime graveyard. The wreck was re-discovered in 1995 and its cargo of 28,000 Gold Sovereigns were recovered along with several interesting artefacts. In our sale we have a sea-encrusted part of a Portuguese Trompe L'oeil Ceramic Dish which possibly sat on the Captain’s Table. Also, on offer are two vials of unrefined gold recovered from the wreck as well as a ‘concreted lump’ of iron that formed part of a holding safe containing fourteen visible gold sovereigns that have been subsumed into its body. Continuing in a maritime theme there is an exquisite late 1700s Telescope by the famed maker ‘Jesse Ramsden.’ Ramsden won the Royal Society's prestigious Copley Medal for scientific advancement in 1795 and his navigational instruments were relied upon by the great naval explorers such as Captain James Cook and the Compte de La Perouse. This is a particularly fine example which comes with the original storage sleeve. In the field of Australiana there is a Land Grant signed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie who as well as being the architect of Australia’s first struck coinage was also responsible for the construction of many of the fine Georgian buildings that survive in Sydney today. Macquarie returned to England in 1822 the same year that the Sydney Academy Prize Medal was struck. This medal is a fine example of silversmithing in the fledgling colony by Samuel Clayton and has been further researched since it was offered last year. I encourage you to read the news article regarding this item when it is goes online in the next few days. As well there are a number of interesting ethnological collectables including Aboriginal Axe heads and a Stone 'Poi' Pounder from the Marquesas Islands. All in all, there is something to attract the interest of the dedicated collector. Happy bidding Smalls Auctions
