Welcome to Smalls Auction No 24.

This month our sale is highlighted by a wide selection of Australasian banknotes including a rarely offered NZ ‘Lefeaux’ £50. This note is the holy grail for collectors of New Zealand banknotes but also has strong international appeal due in part to its striking design featuring the tattooed head the Maori King Tawhao. The Australian banknotes include many rare and scarce notes but if you are looking for quality then look no further than the consecutive pair of ‘Armitage - McFarlane’ £10 notes which are the best that we have handled in 40 years of trading. To entice buyers to our jewellery selection we have included several stunning items representing great value being estimated at just a small fraction of their recent valuations. This sale also includes a few choice military items including a China War Medal with a strong Australian connection, a ‘Chest of Chatham’ pension document for a seaman who was shot with cannon fire at the ‘Battle of Trafalgar’ and a well-executed miniature watercolour portrait of a Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery who did not have a happy new year coming to grief on the 1st January 1778. Once again, we offer a strong selection of Australian Pre-Decimal coins including a 1915 H Florin in PCGS MS65. This date is extremely elusive in high grade and the coin on offer is singularly the second finest graded. For collectors of gold coins, the three Ancient Aurei of Tiberius, Trajan & Faustina Senior capture the imperious days of the Roman Empire, while closer to home the Sydney Mint 1858 Gold Sovereign struck in the gold rush era and graded PCGS MS61 is one of only two recorded in Mint state and is currently the equal finest known. All in all, we think there is something for everyone.

Happy Bidding
