Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 178. In honour of the 109th running of the Tour de France, the world’s most grueling road cycle race, we are offering for sale two rare Chronograph Watches with a Tachymeter Function. Sports fans will be aware of the significance of the penultimate stage of the race which pits the individual cyclists against the clock over a set distance in a ‘time trial.’ Unless there is a breakaway leader this is the stage that usually crowns the winner as it is seen as ‘de rigueur’ to not challenge for the lead in the final stage as the cyclists amble into Paris. Tachymeters use time to measure speed over a set distance and Longines was there from the start with this innovative double-faced Chronograph & Tachymeter Pocket Watch from the early 1900’s. The Sale also includes a good run of third-party graded Australian Sixpences in near pristine condition. As a rule of thumb an MS 63 grade is the equivalent of a Choice Uncirculated coin in the traditional adjectival grading system while an MS64 signifies a near Gem and an MS 65 cuts the grade as a Gem. If you keep this in mind you will understand the quality of the coins on offer. There is also a fine selection of Australian Tribal artefacts including early Boomerangs, Bull Roarers and Churingas which would grace the best collections. Other items of interest are Australian Tradesmen Tokens including an extremely rare 1854 Thornthwaite Halfpenny and a selection of historical Colonial Documents from the mid-1800s. We hope you find something to pique your interest. Smalls Auctions
