Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No. 25.

2017 is rapidly coming to an end and so this month we have expanded our sale to put a little bit of something in the Christmas stocking for everyone.

The sale begins with a fine selection of jewellery including a number of bespoke pieces that are being offered for a small fraction of their 2005 valuations. An opportunity perhaps to invest in some expensive bling at a substantial discount.

There is an exciting selection of world coins including a number of rare world proofs plus a trio of sought after US coins. The US coins were marketed in Australia in the 1980s and are still housed in very early PCGS holders and so are potentially in line for an upgrade. The US 1812 ‘Capped Bust’ Gold Five Dollar PCGS MS64 is a major rarity, the 1854 Silver 3 Cent PCGS MS66 is not far off the finest known, while the 1923 D ‘St Gaudens’ Twenty Dollar PCGS MS67 is an exceptional design revered by collectors and is the equal highest graded.

Once again there is a fine selection of Australian Coins and Banknotes including two very rare coin varieties in the highest grade. The 1939 ‘Double - Foot’ Halfpenny PCGS MS65 is the only example of this coin yet discovered and traces back to the collection of the Governor of the Reserve Bank H.C. Coombs. The 1946 ‘K.G’ Penny PCGS MS64 RB is an intriguing coin which is thought to have been struck in very limited numbers on an experimental die. The sharpness of the dot and its uniformity suggests that it was a legitimate attempt by the Melbourne Mint to mark a die which was originally intended for the Perth Mint. The Melbourne Mint had previously used this mint mark on the 1940 and 1941 Penny dies it had supplied to Perth and the addition of a stop before ‘SHILLING’ on the 1946 die it had supplied to Perth in that year indicates that this mark was still being considered.

Collectors of Australian Modern issues should find plenty of interest in the wide range of popular coloured coins on offer this month.

In the banknote section we are offering a true rarity in the form of a first issue ‘Collins-Allen’ Pound whose ‘Red Serial’ number is the highest recorded of the thirteen surviving notes.

Collectors of Australiana should also be delighted with the two Convict Love Tokens on offer. When Britain lost the Americas in 1776 it also lost the dumping ground for its convicts and so as a short-term solution it commandeered disused vessels anchored on the Thames to house the spill over from its overcrowded prisons. The prison hulks continued to provide a staging post for inmates sentenced to transportation to the new prison colonies in Australia, and it appears there was always someone on board who for a threepence would fashion a love token for a prisoner to leave with his family before they were “banished.” The tokens of Francis Collis and Rachel Barrington are typical of those left behind by the soon to be transported convicts.

Of course, not all convicts who arrived in Australia served their time and then ventured forth on the straight and narrow path of redemption, and Thomas Wright the “Rogue Banker” is certainly an example of someone who transferred his unique criminal skills to the new land. Convicted of forgery he was transported to Australia in his sixties and was still knocking out spurious notes for a number of non-existent banks as he approached his 100th year. He was once again convicted of forgery and exiled from the penal colony of New South Wales to the penal Colony of Norfolk Island (Australia’s Alcatraz) which was established to hold the worst of the worst prisoners.  The only known example of his criminal craft, an ‘Austilin Bank’ One Pound Banknote is featured in the sale.

All in all, there is a wide selection of collectables to satisfy all tastes.

Season’s Greetings
