Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No.40, a smorgasbord of collectables to suit all tastes.

One of the more interesting items on offer this month is the ‘Siege of Amsterdam’ Silver Medal consigned to our sale. The family who own the medal have no family links to the Netherlands and could shed no light on how this incredibly rare medal came to be in Australia. The medal itself commemorates the lifting of the ‘Siege of Amsterdam’ by William II the Prince of Orange in 1650. The prince counted King Charles I of England as his father-in-law having married his nine-year-old daughter at the tender age of fifteen and, was particularly miffed when the English chopped off his head. William planned a punitive strike against the English and so was steadfastly opposed to the reduction in the size of the Dutch Army which was largely being pushed by the burghers of Amsterdam. The siege failed and his plans came to naught when he died soon after of smallpox at the ripe old age of twenty-four. This medal is a true museum piece rarely offered for public sale.

We have also managed to pair a matching stub and ticket from the famous ‘Burns v Johnson’ World Heavyweight Boxing match of 1908. This was arguably the biggest sporting event ever held in Australia, but perhaps more importantly it was also a significant catalyst for change in the bitter race divide in the United States. As a sporting or social marker, the ticket with stub rank as a top-tier collectable.

Collectors of Australian Penny varieties should look closely at the 1922 Penny on offer. This variety with an ‘English’ obverse and an ‘unaltered Birmingham’ reverse is an extremely rare coin in grade whose origins we have argued can be traced back to the Perth Mint. Some Penny variety collectors are also known for wearing tin-foil hats so I’m sure that the theory surrounding this coin will create a lot of arguments in that particular collecting fraternity. Other Australian coins and banknotes on `offer include some of the finest known such as the 1933 Shilling PCGS MS65 and the ‘Sydney Deposit Bank’ One Pound.

There is also a broad selection of World Coins on offer as well as a cameo selection of fine Jewellery and interesting collectables such as a signed ‘fan photo’ of the ‘fab four.’ For Generation Z that’s not a bunch of Marvel superheroes but an iconic band from the sixties called ‘the Beatles.’

We hope you find something to your taste at our table of fine fare.
