Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 180. Occasionally you come across something so rare that you have only ever seen it pictured in a catalogue, and in our current Sale there is one such an item. Back in 1856 The acting Governor of Victoria, General Edward Macarthur, commissioned a medal to commemorate the start of the Volunteer Movement in Australia. These days Australians pride themselves on their record of pitching in in desperate times of flood, fire, and drought but in the 1850s it was a novel idea worth commemorating. Edward Macarthur was himself the son of Captain John Macarthur the rabble rouser behind the infamous Rum Rebellion that deposed Governor Bligh in 1808 although he is now more fondly if known as the pioneer of the Australian Merino Wool Industry which now supplies 70% of the World’s supply of fine wool. This was the first medal struck at the Sydney Mint on dies executed by Julius Hogarth on a design by the artist Ludwig Becker. There were only twelve medals struck in bronze with another six each in silver and gold and so they are all incredibly rare. This one turned up in the Cessnock area and is only the fourth surviving bronze medal to emerge from the mists of time. A true numismatic rarity. The Sale also has a very good selection of Australian Pre-Decimal Banknotes starting from the 1913 ‘Collins/Allen’ One Pound. The note on offer has the highest Serial Numbers of the fifteen surviving notes. It is a complete note in Fine condition, but when the highest gradel known is a flattened Very Fine and most of the other survivors are torn or repaired then beggars can’t be choosers. We also have on offer a selection of Australian Solid Opals which is the gemstone of the moment as well as a delightful selection of Costume Jewellery and of course there is a good selection of Australian coins on offer. We thank you for supporting our sales. Smalls Auctions
