Welcome to Smalls Auction Number 9. This sale offers an eclectic but important mix of collectables ranging from some of the finest known examples of varieties in the popular Australian Penny series to an exceedingly rare 1966 'London Die' Proof 20c. This coin is unique in private hands and matches the example held in the collection of the Royal Australian Mint. In the banknote section we have on offer the only surviving example of an 'Austilin Bank' One Pound, a spurious issue passed by Thomas Saulsbury Wright also known as 'Tommy the Banker' or the 'Rogue Banker'. Thomas was transported to Australia in 1801 as a convict and having achieved his freedom, was then in 1839 tried at the ripe age of 94 years for uttering forged notes drawn on the 'Austilin Bank' which did not actually exist. Tommy was convicted and transported to the harsh Penal Colony of Norfolk Island where he died aged 105 years. More on this intriging piece of Australiana can be learned by viewing Lot 264a. There is also a compact collection of quality Roman Gold coins, the prison mugshots of the infamous Rudolf Hess, the Deputy Fuhrer of Nazi Germany and Albert Speer, Hitler's personal architect. There is also a cameo collection of French Military Medals and some original World War I photos featuring Australian troops as well as many other interesting items.
