Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 182. We have on offer in the Sale a nice selection of new jewellery lots including two affordable pieces by Tiffany and Bulgari offered at a fraction of their normal retail prices. Amongst the collectables on offer are some intricate Chinese Cork carvings which adorned many an Australian Living Room Mantle in the 1960s. The carvings are entombed in double-sided glass in black lacquered display boxes so that you can obverse the intricacy of the work from all angles. They were usually brought home by travellers passing through the Hong Kong on the great sea liners like the ‘Himalaya’ and capture the spirit of the Orient. There is also a selection of Georgian and Victorian seals, some in gold and some in base metal, but all with intriguing designs. The Australian coins on offer start from the earliest known surviving Colonial Dump to a unique Factory Trial of an unrecorded type. Both are museum standard items for the serious numismatist. There is also a strong selection of Australian Pre-Decimal Copper coins. The 1914 Penny is worth special mention as it is the sharpest strike of this coin that we have encountered and would grace even the best collections. There is also a cameo selection of gold coins including an affordable 1787 ‘Spade Guinea’ of George III which was part of the Australian Proclamation series. In 1800, the Governor of New South Wales, Philip Gidley King proclaimed a selection of coins that circulated internationally to have legal tender status in the burgeoning Colony at above their recognised face value. The ‘Spade Guinea’ for instance which was worth twenty-one shillings was elevated to twenty-two shillings in the Colony. This was to stop circulated coin from leaving its shores on the trading ships that plied trade between the colonies. Great in theory but poor in practice as the traders just put up their prices and left with the cash regardless. Thank you for your continuing support of our sales and if there is nothing in this Sale for you then there is always next week. Smalls Auctions
