Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No. 26.

To welcome in 2018, we have on offer a wide selection of collectables beginning with a strong selection of jewellery and concluding with some interesting stamps.

A highlight of the sale is an unsurpassed selection of sixpences for which there could be no stronger provenance. The noted Sydney Ophthalmologist Paul Adler had assembled his sixpence collection over a 20 year period before it was absorbed into the Benchmark Collection. The coins which are currently in NGC holders are superb examples which to a coin rate amongst the finest known. For those who prefer their coins in PCGS holders we would expect that all the coins would cross. Of especial mention are the 1920M NGC MS66 which is in our opinion the best of date closely followed by the 1923 Sixpence NGC MS65. This was the first date in the sixpence series to adopt a new reverse and the example on offer is an early proof-like strike with high wire rims.

The sale also includes a rare selection of Turkish Specimen banknotes from the World War I era.  The notes were found in Australia and it is speculated that they were once the property of Huseyin Cahid the Vice-President of the Ottoman Parliament. The 50,000 Livre note is extremely rare being one of only a few surviving notes and when issued was worth the equivalent of over USD 200,000 or about 13 bitcoins today.

Australia has a very strong connection to Turkey through the ANZAC campaign of 1915 and included in this sale is a very rare War Enlistment Poster that has survived in remarkable condition.

For collectors of Australian banknotes there is a strong selection of specimens and star replacement notes in original uncirculated condition. Wise collectors will know that most Auction listings of Uncirculated Australian paper notes are at best miss-described. Unfortunately, it was a past practice for Australian Banknote dealers to flatten notes to elicit a higher grade and so the vast majority of Uncirculated banknotes being sold today are at best Extremely Fine when they are closely inspected. Where appropriate we have described unaltered notes as displaying Original Paper Quality.

For Gold bugs look no further than the 20 oz Nugget from Coolgardie of almost pure content. It is certainly an impressive specimen and the ultimate paperweight for the person who has everything.

Happy bidding
