Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 33. Again, this month we offer an array of Jewellery, Coins, Banknotes, Stamps and other interesting Collectables. Of special interest is a selection of Government circulars from a cache of historic documents that we will be auctioning over the next few months. These cover detailed correspondence regarding the desire of the Melbourne Mint to strike silver coins for circulation in the late 1890s, Aboriginal rights in Victoria in the 1860s and the annexation of (West) New South Wales by South Australia in 1858. The last obscure fact would certainly earn you bragging rights at a trivia night I should think.

The ‘first editions’ of Matthew Flinders “A Voyage to Terra Australia” with accompanying atlas is worth special mention as is a rare version of Capt'n John Lort Stokes “Discoveries in Australia.” Both offer intriguing insights into the discovery and exploration of Australia.

The Australian coin selection offers a 1922/1 Overdate Threepence in PCGS VF25 which ranks in in the top few graded coins of this rare variety as well as a 1921 * Shilling in PCGS MS64 Which is also highly regarded. The ‘Benchmark’ 1920 /./ Indian Obverse Penny PCGS MS65RB and the 1928 Penny PCGS MS65RB are both the equal finest known. The Australian Steam Navigation tokens proves there is extreme rarity and value in the ugliest things. The Halfpenny token is surcharged (overstruck) on an English Geo IV Halfpenny and is probably unique and the Penny token struck on a Victorian penny is the clearest example known of this exceedingly rare issue.

The sale rounds off with a good selection of stamp issues from Australia, New Guinea, Norfolk Island and the USA which were collected from the 1960s on.

We hope you find something to please.
