Welcome to Smalls Auction No.16 which offers a diverse selection of collectables covering many specialist interests. Of particular note is an important selection of first and early editions books covering Australia’s early European history. The rarely offered 1781 volume of “A Voyage Round the Word” a colourful account of Captain Cook’s second voyage is a highlight, as is the First Editions of the Flinders Journals “A Voyage to Terra Australis” which were published in 1814. Like Cook, Matthew Flinders is regarded as in the top echelon of maritime explorers and his account of his voyages makes riveting reading. In the banknote section, we have on offer an extremely rare New Zealand ‘Lefeaux’ Fifty Pound note featuring a cameo of a Maori Chieftain. This note is absent from all but the best collections and as a circulation issue is considerably rarer than the specimen note of this type. In recent times, we have seen a parade of boxing contests promoted as the biggest of all time which of course conveniently forgets the 1908 bout between the Canadian Tommy Burns, the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, and the American negro Jack Johnson who defeated him. Held at Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay before a crowd of over 20,000 people it was an event that changed the course of both sporting and social history. In our sale, we offer the only complete matching stub and ticket to the fight as well as a separate collection of items including contemporary signed photographs of Burns and Johnson, another rare ticket, a program, a rare photograph of the contest as well as many other items including a letter penned by Burns in 1953 describing his own take on the fight. In the coin section, we are offering a complete collection of the coins of New Guinea when it was an Australian mandated territory under the UN charter. This collection is impossible to improve upon as it contains several rare and unique proofs. Also on offer are the ultra-rare 1937 New Guinea Pattern 3d and 6d and an extremely rare copper trial of the 1929 Penny with a milled edge.  All in all, this auction offers collectors and investors an opportunity to own an important piece of history.

Happy bidding,
