Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 38.

In our first sale of the year we are concentrating on a vast array of items of historical import. For collectors interested in Australia’s early history we have included three rare ‘Convict Love Tokens’ which best capture the main reason for the country’s foundation. Australia had long been touted by Sir Joseph Banks as a potential destination for England’s criminal classes after it lost its previous dumping ground America, following the War of Independence. Banks with his Swedish colleague Daniel Solander had accompanied Captain Cook on his ‘First Voyage of Discovery’ when they ‘discovered’ the Eastern seaboard of Australia. He later became very vocal in support of the idea of setting up a Penal Colony in Australia as the best way to consolidate England’s claim to the Continent. The sale also includes rare examples of the Silver and Bronze medals dedicated to the achievements of the great naturalist Daniel Solander.

In this 100th Anniversary Year of the end of World War I we have also included a further selection of War Photographs taken by Official War Photographers at the Front that capture Australia’s involvement. Although the Australian colonies didn’t federate as a nation until 1901 its troops had been called on in earlier years to defend the Empire against threats of attack such as in the China Wars of 1899-1901. The China Medal in this sale is one of over 8,000 awarded to an Englishman but has added importance to collectors of Militaria as its recipient W.H. Littlefield emigrated to Australia and oversaw the Signal Station at South Head the night that the Japanese midget submarines snuck into Sydney Harbour in May 1942 to attack the Allied fleet. In the sale we also have a scarce lead model of a Japanese Midget Submarine which was sold to the public to raise funds for the War Effort. The impression on the sub reads "Made from the Ballast Jap Midget Sub/Sunk in Sydney Harbour May 31 1942".

Further into the sale there are intriguing autographs of many of the World’s movers and shakers in the lead up to World War II and beyond. Included are Ministers of the UK Government, US Secretaries of State and War and Presidential nominees. Formidable public servants such as the American Henry Stimson who served as the 'Secretary of War' from 1940-45, had previously held the same position in 1911-13 before being appointed Governor General of the Philippines 1927 - 1929 and the U.S. Secretary of State 1929-1933. Although he would likely have not lasted a year under the current President.

For collectors of prestige Australian coins, we have included a glorious Australian 1923 Florin in PCGS MS67. This coin was one of a handful put away at the time by the legendary London firm Baldwins and latterly was included in the Benchmark Collection of Australian Pre-decimal coins. The coin is beautifully toned, fully struck-up and flawless and in our opinion is the finest known Australian Florin of George V. If ever there was a Florin worthy of an up-grade to the hallowed MS68 then this is it. There is also a nice selection of other desirable coins in the series including the highly sought-after 1921 * Shilling PCGS MS64 which is hard to beat in terms of quality.

The banknotes on offer include a strong selection of quality Australian pre-decimal notes and there are interesting cameo offerings of world coins and banknotes.

We thank you for your participation and wish you all the best for 2019.
