Welcome to Smalls Auctions No.22. This month we offer a broad range of collectables which we hope offers something to tempt you in your area of interest.

We include another selection of rare Australian coins with another seven setting the bar as the equal or single finest known. Of particular note is the ‘Spread J . E . B .’ variety of the 1887 ‘M’ Jubilee Half Sovereign PCGS MS63, which as well as being identified as the single finest known is also the only example yet to be graded in Mint State. It is a champion coin and to quote an old Australian racing colloquialism it would appear to be the best by the length of the straight. Also, worth special mention is the Australian 1917 Florin in PCGS MS65 which has not been bettered since it was purchased from Spinks by Frank Gates in 1985. Collectors who are interested in provenance should refer to the backup pictures for this listing which describes the ‘Gates’ Florin Collection in its entirety.

In our banknotes, we have on offer a previously unknown SPECIMEN ‘Johnston - Fraser’ $50 with Gothic Serials. In 1988 the serial type on the $50 notes was changed to OCR-B numbers which were computer readable, and it is speculated that this 'specimem' of the soon to be replaced note was passed around the Reserve Bank Boardroom to demonstrate the differing type faces. It was found in the estate of (M) john Phillips the influential Deputy-Governor of the Reserve Bank who also acted as Governor of the Bank in 1989. This truly intriguing banknote has been authenticated, preserved and third-party graded as PCGS 64, Choice Uncirculated, O(riginal) P(aper) Q(uality).

Also on offer is a selection of high-grade world coins from the renowned collection of Jerome Remick. The South African proof sets are well matched and of exceptional quality and have been third-party graded by NGC. The extremely rare 1933 and 1937 proof sets of Egypt also graded by NGC were once part of the Melbourne Mint Museum reference collection, another impeccable source.

For those who have been following the recent ructions of the ‘Trump’ Administration we include the autographs of three past White House Press Secretaries and a Director of Communications. The esteemed James Hagerty who was the Press Secretary for President Eisenhower from 1953 to 1961 holds the distinction of being the only Press Secretary to serve two complete presidential terms. But would he have survived the Donald?

Thank you for your patronage and we wish you the best of luck with your bidding.
