Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 269. The start of the Paris 2024 Olympics is now less than 50 days away so in the spirit of sports excellence we have included in this sale a selection of sporting memorabilia. Two intriguing medals are the United German Team Medals for the 1956 Olympics and the 1960 Rome Olympics. Post-WWII, Berlin was partitioned into four zones controlled by the United States, Britain, France and the Soviet Union but still competed at the Olympics as a United East - West team until 1964 even after the construction of the Berlin Wall. European migration to Australia surged post-WWII and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics allowed the ‘New Australians’ to cheer on athletes from the old countries. These Games were the first held in the Southern Hemisphere and were a nation-building exercise for Australia captured in magazines such as the iconic Australian Women’s Weekly, copies of which are included in the Sale. The Olympics is awarded to a city not a nation and in 1993 Juan Antonio Samaranch famously proclaimed "Syd-den-ey" as the successful host city for the 2000 Games. In the Sale, we have a scarce International Olympic Committee Silver-plate Medal celebrating "Juan Antonio Samaranch / IOC President 1980 -2001. For Sydneysiders, there is a New South Wales 1911 First Grade Rugby League Football Winner's Fob in 9ct Yellow Gold presented to Charlie Lees, a member of Eastern Suburbs' first premiership-winning side. Lees scored his side's only try in the Grand Final when Eastern Suburbs defeated Glebe 11-8. The competition kicked off in 1908 when Easts were defeated by South Sydney and in the Sale is Lee’s Reserve Grade Runner’s-Up Fob from the inaugural year. There are plenty of other sporting souvenirs including Athletes Participation medals from the 1954 Vancouver and the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games. As usual, there is a strong selection of Jewellery, Coins, Banknotes, and other Collectables to round out the Sale. Smalls Auctions
