Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No.42.

This month we have a good selection of modern coin issues from the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint. This is a prime opportunity to fill gaps in your collection that you missed first time around and usually for a fraction of the price. And, don’t be deterred if the packaging is slightly soiled as the ‘modern’ modern collector is now likely to break open the mint cases to send individual coins away for third-party-grading. Well over 90% of coins graded by the main grading services, PCGS & NGC, are modern issues that have been removed from their official packaging.

Two interesting items that capture the spirit of Australia are the contemporary oil painting ‘Beach Pattern’ by Craig Parnaby and the framed poem ‘The Rollovers’ by Les Murray. The first captures the pervasive ‘beach culture’ that is Australia where most of its population clings to the eastern seaboard, and the second a flip-side view of the hardship associated with ‘the bush.’

Collectors of Australian Colonial coins should be well versed on the unofficial gold coins and ingots that were produced in 1852 at the Adelaide Assay Office and, so an item of great historical import is the set of precision Gold Scales thought to be used in their production. The provenance of the scales is to a degree folklore, but it is known that a similar set which are now ‘lost’ were used at the Sydney Mint from 1855 when its first sovereigns were produced. Government scales had a number pencilled in on the base of the draws which in the case of this set was ‘No. L2’, so it is at least apparent that the scales were used in some official capacity.

There is also a selection of desirable ‘primitive’ artefacts from the Oceania especially the ‘Rei Miro’ breastplate from Easter Island. These are as rare as the native hardwoods found on this bleak outcrop with islanders often resorting to using driftwood to carve these emblems of high rank. This particular specimen is provenanced to about 1914 when it was acquired in New Zealand by a family of British émigrés and passed down through the family.

As usual there is a fine selection of Australian and World coins and banknotes many in exceptionally high grade. A standout is the Proof 1966 ‘London’ die 20 Cent PCGS PR63 CAM which probably stands alone as the rarest Australian decimal coin available to collectors. There is also an interesting cameo selection of fine jewellery to suit most tastes.

We hope you find something to interest you in our sale.
