Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 217. It is interesting how the designs adopted on coins and banknotes are often the subject of political pressure. If you look too closely at the historical figures from the past, many whose images adorn the face of the world’s currencies, you can quite often find ‘skeletons in the closet’ that offend the politically correct citizens of today. Currency designs evolve as past heroes are ‘cancelled’ and new heroes are elevated because it doesn’t take much sleuthing to uncover some unsavoury dimension of a person’s past that sits uneasy with the ‘victims’ of the present. Controversy over currency designs is not necessarily a modern thing and in our sale we have two suggested ‘colour trials’ and a ‘specimen’ of the adopted design for the Ottoman Turkey AH1332 (1916) 20 Piastre. During WWI, the Turkish Economy was bankrolled by its military ally Germany and its emergency issue banknotes printed by the German firm Giesecke & Devrient. Before their release 'specimens’ of the note designs were forwarded to Huseyin Cahid the Vice-President of the Ottoman Parliament for his approval. Cahid was a vehement Turkish nationalist who studied the designs closely looking for hidden Armenian symbols that he falsely accused a rival parliamentarian Voskan Martikaian of placing in the designs. Although 21,875,000 of the 20 Piastre were printed it is likely that the two unadopted colour trial notes and a specimen note of the adopted colour which were forwarded to Cahid are a ‘unique’ surviving combination. They represent a rare glimpse into the unsettled history of WWI. Also in the sale is a wide selection of Australian Pre-decimal coins and banknotes, as well as a selection of military buttons and pins, music biographies, jewellery and other collectables.
