Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No.36

This month our sale surrounds several items pivotal to Australian history.

On offer is a very rare La Perouse Explorational Medal dating back to the earliest period of European settlement in Australia. The seafarer Compte de La Perouse led a French expedition to the Pacific sailing into Botany Bay in 1788 just days after the First Fleet had disembarked to establish a British penal colony. The expedition was lost, and its fate remained a mystery until the shipwrecks of La Boussolle and L’Astrolabe were discovered on the reefs of Vanikoro in the Solomon’s archipelago in 1826 during the voyage of Dumont D’urville. A rare commemorative medal marking this voyage is also included in the sale.

Another very interesting piece of Australiana is the silver fob admitting two to the 1868 Season of the Sydney Opera. It is thought to be the only surviving example and was the property of F.B. Toulmin, the Secretary to, Somerset Lowry-Corry, the Governor of New South Wales.

In April 1915 Australian troops landed at Gallipoli expecting a quick victory over the Ottoman Turks on the march to take Istanbul. The troops had been given British notes overprinted in Arabic to be exchanged for goods and services from the locals, but as the campaign stalled on the hills above the beachhead the notes were withdrawn. Some of the 10/- notes given to enlisted men were souvenired and although scarce they are procurable but, the £1 notes given to officers are rarely seen. This month we offer a very fine example of the World War I issue.

Another item of historical import is the specimen of a ‘1927 State of New South Wales $1,000 Bond’ a planned offering to US investors to fund the building of Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge. This capital raising didn’t go ahead with funds eventually coming from traditional British sources, but this unique document with its coupons still attached is a reminder of the boom and bust of the Depression era.

As usual our sale includes a number Australian Pre-decimal coins that qualify as the finest known and a strong selection of Australian Pre-decimal and Decimal banknotes. There is also a strong selection of world coins as well as a boutique selection of jewellery and other collectables

We hope you find something to pique your interest

Happy bidding
