Welcome to Smalls Auction 17. In this sale, we offer a diverse range of collectables including a good selection of silverware from Great Britain, Russia & Europe, rare books and prints, coins, banknotes and stamps. Of particular importance is the Great Britain 1797 Emergency Dollar with an oval counterstamp of George III on a France 1792 M Constitution Ecu (Toulouse Mint). This coin is extremely rare with only a handful known but in combination with the ‘error edge lettering’ is believed to be unique. For collectors of Australian coin varieties there is an exceptional Australian 1924 ‘Indian Die’ Penny in PCGS MS64RB which is the equal finest known and unlikely to be bettered in terms of quality. In the selection of Australian banknotes, the standout item is a Miller-Collins signature Ten Shilling note of 1923 in about Uncirculated/Uncirculated condition which was souvenired by a staff member of the Reserve Bank of Australia. Unlike other notes of this type in the market place which purport to be high grade, this note is as fresh as the day it was issued. Also included in the sale is a very rare set of Phillips/Wheeler ‘Australia’ specimen banknotes which were presented to John Phillips the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia. Again, the quality of the notes are superb as befits an official presentation set. The rare books on offer include important first editions of the Flinders Journals “A Voyage to Terra Australis” and a second release of the first edition of “A Voyage Round the World”, an unauthorised and controversial account of Cook’s second voyage which was published anonymously by on ‘Officer on Board’. Very few of this edition have survived, and the one owned by the State Library of New south Wales is singled out in its collection as an extreme rarity. The cover item for our sale is the Sydney Academy Merit Medal issued in 1822 to Master James Cunningham for Literature. This medal which is pre-dated by only two of the surviving Halloran medals is one of the earliest surviving examples of Australian silversmithing of this type and is a pivotal piece of Australiana. Happy bidding. Smalls Auctions
