Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 215. The Sale commences with a one-person collection of jewellery which is reserved at extremely attractive prices. It is worth getting out your calculator to discover the bargains on offer with Gold currently broaching AUD $3,000 per Troy Ounce. Also on offer is some interesting Art as well as a couple of especially important Documents. From a deceased estate we have a number of Chinese & Japanese watercolours and prints which are offered as-is and without restoration. They once adorned the walls of a very expensive Sydney house and show evidence of being affected by humidity. But, from our limited research they appear to be original artworks and we offer them at modest speculative prices with the potential that they could be worth considerably more if restored to their former glory. The first document on offer is a personal letter penned by the White Canadian Tommy Burns the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion describing his brutal contest with Jack Johnson the Black American challenger who claimed his crown on Boxing Day in 1908 at Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay. The letter is an important testament of the blatant racial hatred that ruled society in the early 20th Century and which some say carries through to today. It is well worth reading the transcript of the letter that accompanies the description of this lot. The Second document is a hand-written poem by Les Murray considered by many to be Australia’s Poet Laureate. Murray was called upon by Prime Minister John Howard to pen an acknowledgement of ‘First Nation’ peoples in the Australian Constitution. His contribution came to naught with the proposal being rejected by the Australian people in the Republic Referendum held in 1999. The idea once again is being put forward for consideration in a Referendum to be held at the end of the year. Fingers crossed this time. Murray’s poem titled ‘the Rollovers’ stingingly inverts the circumstances of a property owner being dispossessed by a rapacious bank. A poem of recurring times. The Sale of course also contains other collectables including a good selection of coins and banknotes. Happy bidding, Smalls Auctions
