Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale Number 8 which includes a selection of rare historical documents and medals as well as an impressive collection of Australian Decimal Specimen Banknotes that were presented to (M) John Phillips, the only Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia whose signature appears on its banknotes. Phillips assumed the role of Governor between the retirement of R (Bob) Johnston in July 1989 and the appointment of Bernie Fraser to the role in September 1989. Phillips was also on the Board of the Reserve Bank from 1987 to 1992 and was presented with other items of interest as a consequence of office. Auction lots numbered between 170 and 200 in the sale cover items from his collection. Of interest to collectors of early colonial coins is a New South Wales Charles IIII Portrait Holey Dollar of 1813 as well as a very rare NSW 1813 C4 Dump of which less than 10 specimens are known to have survived, and a unique trial strike of a NSW 1813 E3 Dump struck on a copper penny (It is worth noting that in 2007 a copper trial of a Holey Dollar also struck on an English Cartwheel Penny sold for $233,000). There is also a wide selection of world coins and banknotes and a cameo collection of Australian Tradesman Tokens to round out the sale. Happy bidding. Smalls Auctions.
