Welcome to Smalls Auction No.15 an eclectic mix of collectables both historic and contemporary.

As usual there is a strong selection of Australian coins and banknotes from our earliest colonial currency to a wide selection of Royal Australian Mint & Perth Mint commemorative issues. Of special note is an exceedingly rare NSW Holey Dollar of 1813. This coin was struck on a Charles IIII 1790 8 Reale featuring the armoured bust of Charles III and is almost certainly a unique type of the 300 or so surviving Holey Dollars. A hoard of Australian sixpences from the early 1940s is also of interest. These were found buried in a wooden chest and wrapped in papers stamped the "Contact Novelty Co(mpany). They came to light during a swimming pool excavation in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney proving that buried treasure does still exist. Also on offer are early promissory notes of New South Wales that passed as currency to fill the shortage of circulating coinage in the fledgling colony. The world coin section includes some very rare war-era proof sets from Iceland and the Faeroe Islands which were once part of the official collection of the Melbourne Mint. It is important to note that the Royal Mint itself somehow forgot to keep a proof record set of the 1946-dated coins it struck for the first Republic of Iceland making the set in our sale a particularly rare offering. In this sale for this first time are some unique first prefix specimen notes of the signatories MacFarlane and Henry and Stevens and Henry. These were taken from single specimen sheets issued with the imprimatur of the residing Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia. The rarest of these specimens is certainly the AA07 & AB07 $5 consecutive prefix pair, as notes bearing these prefixes were never issued for circulation (BA07 prefix being the first circulation issue). In the world banknote section, there is an highly unusual specimen of a Bank of New South Wales Five Shilling, a denomination which was prepared for but not released in New Zealand. The actual note on offer is pictured in the specialised edition of the Pick Catalogue of World Paper Money and is believed to be one of only two extant. However, we appreciate that the world of heady coin and banknote rarities is not for everyone, and so to conclude the sale we have for collectors of neat bourbon a selection of Jim Beam Car Decanters which were “handcrafted of genuine porcelain” (and plastic) in the USA in the 1970s. The decanters are unopened and it is presumed the bourbon is still drinkable.

Cheers
