Welcome to Smalls Auction 13 which again offers a diverse selection of collectables across a wide range of fields. For collectors of Australian coins, we have a strong selection of PCGS third-party graded coins in desirable grades including the finest known 1917 Shilling. There is also a selection of NSW 1813 Dumps including an unlisted copper pattern, a unique ‘Type E3’ Dump struck as a trial in copper as well as a rare ‘C4 Type’ of which there is less than ten known. As a reflection of our convict roots there is a contemporary copper forgery of a Dump found during the Pitt Street (Sydney) rail excavations of 1927. Collectors of Art with an historical bent should look no further than the original pen sketch of “A Road in France” by Australian artist Penleigh Boyd. The uncle of Arthur and David Boyd was a renowned artist before joining the A.I.F. and serving on the Western Front where he was heavily gassed and invalided to Britain. While serving at the front he found a cartographer’s nib in the dirt and recorded in a series of pen drawings everyday life at the Front. A selection of contemporary war photographs included in the sale also captures the lives of Australian soldiers in World War I. An unusual offering is a collection of toy soldiers crafted not in the usual tin but in expensive Russian silver. Were these possibly the plaything for the children of a very wealthy family? There is also a collection of the “Beatles Monthly Book” Nos 2 -13 which detail the lives of the ‘Fab 4’ in the early 1960s as well as a fully signed fan photo of the Beatles from their Australian tour. Continuing the musical theme, there is also a signed copy of the popular secular hymn “Hallelujah” by the late great Lenard Cohen. The sale concludes with some rare photographs of rural Australia and New Zealand. We thank you for your patronage during the year and wish you all the best in 2017. Season’s Greetings and Happy Bidding. Smalls Auctions.
