Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 212 our ‘Bumper Easter Sale.’ This Sale will run across two weeks while the staff of Currency-World attend a trade fair in Hong Kong. We have included in the Sale a wide selection of collectables beginning with a tasteful selection of Fine Jewellery accumulated by an Art Gallery administrator. Many items are reserved at a fraction of their retail value and so they are well worth a look. Also of note is some historical Jewellery, Medals and Badges that capture the shifting complexion of Australia’s often race-fuelled political landscape. Australia’s Gold Rush of the 1850-60s brought many fortune seekers to our shores and in our Sale we have a superb example of Goldfield’s Jewellery in the form of a Bar Brooch sporting three small gold nuggets. Gold breeds greed and the ‘White Australia’ policies that operated in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries were largely designed to stem the flow of Chinese to Australian goldfields. The Australian Natives Association which restricted its membership to White Australians born in the colonies was founded in 1871 to discourage Chinese immigration. And, while it was supposedly apolitical it worked assiduously behind the scenes to maintain the ‘White Australia Policy’ well into the 20th Century. In our Sale we have a Gold Membership Fob dated 1921. Today, the press and politicians of Australia are again voicing considerable anti-Chinese rhetoric fuelled by China’s rising military might. But it is worth remembering that during WWII China was very much considered a staunch ally with fund-raising badges being sold locally to help the Chinese resistance against the marauding Japanese. In our Sale we have two rare high value £5 & £10 Charity Badges supporting the ‘Chinese Comforts Funds. Australia’s sentiments flipped again in 1949 when the Nationalist Chinese lost a Civil War and fled to the island of Formosa (Taiwan) to establish a bulwark against the communists who had seized control of mainland China. Australian Chinese were certainly not communists and in our Sale we have a Sterling Silver Committee Medal issued in the 1950’s by the Victorian Branch of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce that features at its heart the Chinese Nationalist Flag. It is an important relic of Australia’s political evolution. The Sale has too many other highlights to mention and so I will leave it to you to search for that special item in the 500 lots that piques your interest. Happy bidding. Smalls Auctions
