Welcome to Smalls Auction Sale 35. The sale commences with a wide selection of jewellery and antiques to suit most budgets and tastes. Of special interest is a sterling silver Emu Egg by the renowned Melbourne jeweller William Edwards who was one of the first to mimic the mounted Ostrich eggs that were popular in Europe. This is followed by an interesting selection of historical medals highlighted by an important Prize Medal for the Sydney Academy dated 1822. The Academy was established at Parramatta in 1813 before transferring first to Pitt Street in 1815, then Philip Street in 1816, before eventually moving to larger premises in Macquarie Street near the Sydney Domain. The engraving on the medal is stylistically similar to that on the prized Halloran School medals of the same era which suggests it was also the work of the early colonial silversmith Samuel Clayton. As the only known surviving example it is a very desirable piece of Australiana being pre-dated by only two of the Halloran medals. There is also a matching serial number pair of Promissory notes signed and dated 1812 by William Jenkins a reformed sheep duffer (thief) who came to an unfortunate end in a hotel robbery at Parramatta in 1814. Moving on to 1852 we have on offer the highest graded Type 2 Adelaide Pound PCGS MS65 with a starting bid of $125,000 which would appear good value against an ungraded example which is being promoted as the finest known in a rival auction with a starting bid of $400,000. There are again some very high-quality Australian Pre-decimal coins with the 1916 Threepence and 1913 Shilling both from the Benchmark Collection deserving special mention. They are currently considered by PCGS as the second finest examples although they both are potential upgrades in our opinion. There is also a fine selection of banknotes and stamps to conclude the sale.

Happy bidding
