Smalls Auctions Timed-Sale No.49 is now online and in this sale we offer a long-forgotten hoard of Indian Gold Pagodas struck for the Madras Presidency between the years 1808 -15. These coins traded internationally in all corners of the British Empire but hold greater significance for collectors of Australian Colonial Coinage because the denomination was included in Governor King’s Proclamation of 1800. A Pagoda had a local value of 8 Shillings which was in excess of its intrinsic gold value and the theory was that the coins would be contained in New South Wales rather than leaving the Colony as payment to maritime traders. The reality was that the traders upped their prices and the coins left anyway but its certain that the coins were at least transacted in the Colony up until more regular supplies of British coins were available in the 1820s. Another coin of great importance is the New Guinea 1936 Proof Penny NGC PF65 RD. This was the year of the ‘three kings’ with the death of George V followed by the brief rule of Edward VIII and his subsequent replacement by his brother Albert who adopted his fourth name to be crowned George VI. Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson creating a constitutional crisis. New Guinea was one of only a handful of British colonies that produced coins recognising his brief reign and, the proof penny on offer as well as being exceedingly rare is also the finest known. For banknote connoisseurs we have secured another run of ten Armitage-McFarlane £10 notes from a World War II hoard. These notes were put away at the time and are as fresh as the day they were printed and are listed as five consecutive pairs. There are also several rare world coins from the Jerome Remick Collection including a ‘proof-year-only’ Gibraltar 1861 2 Quarts Proof PCGS PR61 RB which is far better than the grade suggests. In the Australian coin section special mention is made of the 1921 Melbourne Threepence PCGS MS65. This is a superior coin to the usual threepences of this date which usually show strong evidence of being struck on a rusty obverse die. This is a highly competitive example with only one coin graded higher. There are also plenty of bargains to secure in the ‘moderns’ section as well as some very cheap world stamp lots for those who like to travel by letting 'their fingers do the walking.'
