Smalls Auctions Timed-Sale No.53 is now online. This is an exciting sale for collectors of mint errors particularly ‘mules.’ For the uninitiated a ‘mule’ coin is the clashing of two dies that should never have come together and usually involve the obverse and reverses of coins of different denominations from the same country or, as is the case of the three coins in our Sale, the combination of obverses and reverses from totally different countries. In 1916 the Calcutta Mint had been contracted to strike halfpennies for Australia and a neglectful worker forgot to switch over the Obverse die of the Indian Quarter Rupee for an Australian Obverse when production began on the 1916 I Halfpenny. The error was quickly discovered, and the obverse die switched which is why only a handful of genuine examples of the 1916 I ‘Mule’ Halfpenny have surfaced over the years. The example in our Sale graded PCGS EF40 is one of the finest known and is one of the World’s true numismatic rarities. In a similar vein we have an East India Company 1797 1/48 Rupee Reverse paired with the obverse of a 1991 Sierra Leone Company Penny. This ‘mule’ is also exceedingly rare and the coin in our Sale graded MS62 BN is ex the Jerome Remick Collection and is the finest known. But perhaps the most bizarre combination is the Reverse of a Great Britain Victorian English Penny paired with a Jamaican 1888 Farthing. Struck on a cupro - nickel planchet the obverse and reverse are perfectly formed as is indicated by its NGC MS66 grade, although the larger Penny Reverse design is incomplete although centred. This coin struck at the Royal Mint is believed to be unique and proves that it was not only the branch mints that had an off day. This is confirmed by another intriguing Mint error from the famous Norweb Collection in the form of a Great Britain 1951 Farthing struck on a cupro - nickel Sixpence Planchet which is also featured in the Sale. The Sale also has a diverse range of quality Australian and World Coins, Banknotes and Stamps, some with impeccable pedigrees. Collectors of ‘specimen’ banknotes should look at the ‘Fraser- Cole’ 1992 AA 00000000 Polymer $5 with ‘SPECIMEN No. 0000’ a truly unique offering. Happy bidding Smalls Auctions.
