Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 210. The highlight of this Sale is the iconic 1930 Penny perhaps the most famous copper coin in the World. These coins lay undiscovered in circulation until the 1940s when they first came to the attention of the coin collecting fraternity. In 1930 the ‘Great Depression’ was in full swing and there had been no need to strike pennies for circulation but the dies that lay dormant were used as ‘experimental’ dies in August of the following year when the coin presses were being set up for the production of 1931 pennies. It is thought that perhaps 1,500 coins were inadvertently released into circulation and the ‘treasure hunt’ that it set off right up until the changeover to Decimal Currency in 1966 is the legend of Australian folklore. The coin in our Auction sits comfortably in the top 20 surviving examples and is very attractively priced considering recent Auction results. Of course if you don’t want your 1930 Penny to appear an orphan there is a very good selection of other dates of pennies in better grade to complete your set. The Sale also includes an interesting selection of small collectables, Hungarian sports medals, World Coins, Australian Modern Coin issues, Australian Banknotes and Jewellery. We hope there is something in our Sale that draws your attention. Smalls Auctions
