Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 39.

This month we feature two rare collectables directly connected to two ‘chancers’ from America who came to Australia to seek their fortune.

The first is a ‘scrimshaw’ horn etched by George King the step-father of Ned Kelly. King was the second husband of Ned’s mother Ellen who introduced his step-son to the ignoble art of horse thieving which would bring Ned to the attention of the local constabulary. While Ned was on the run for the attempted murder of a local trooper King saw an opportunity to take advantage of his step-son’s growing notoriety by producing a number of carved horns re-telling the story of the ‘Kelly Gang.’ Little is known of the fate of King, but it is rumoured that he took flight to New Zealand to escape the clutches of the law.

The second gentleman was the young American ‘sealer’ who jumped ship in Hobart town in 1822 with his worldly possessions of 10 gallons of rum and a single Spanish Silver Dollar. From such humble beginnings he charmed into marriage a local lass whose father ran a brewery and just two years later was issuing promissory (currency) notes redeemable at his own ‘Spread Eagle’ Hotel.

There is also a full selection of ‘Internment Camps’ tokens which were used in the Prisoner of War Camps in Australia and New Zealand during World War II. These were struck under the authority of the Department of Army by two Melbourne contractors R. Arendeen & Sons and K.G. Luke & Co. and had no value outside the perimeter of the camps just in case an escapee managed to broach the fence.

For collectors of Australian coins there is the finest known 1933 Florin PCGS MS66 which stands at the pinnacle of the twenty-five Mint State coins graded by PCGS and NGC as well as many other fine coins. The World coin section features a rare variety on a Mombasa 1888 Rupee with seriffed obverse lettering which was identified and catalogued by the great Commonwealth collector Jerome Remick and was once part of his collection.

Also included are a selection of Australian ‘specimen’ banknotes issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia. As well as being forwarded to various banks and public offices for their reference collections ‘specimens’ were gifted to important Australians and the two paper specimens on offer were once the property of (M) John Phillips the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank who assumed the role of acting Governor for a few months back in 1989.

As usual there is a cameo selection of jewellery, paintings, antiques and other collectables to whet the appetite of most collectors.
